Helping Families Find Their Voice: My Journey as a Student Advocate

Hello, I’m Karina, and welcome to TalkToMyAdvocate.

For years, one of the most rewarding parts of my work has been helping families throughout the Los Angeles County area navigate the often complicated process of securing the educational resources and support their children need to succeed.

As a parent, walking into an IEP or 504 meeting can sometimes feel overwhelming. There are evaluations to understand, goals to review, accommodations to consider, services to discuss, and terminology that may be completely unfamiliar. Families are often expected to make important decisions about their child's education while trying to understand a system they may be encountering for the first time.

That is where I hope to make a difference.

Every Student Has Different Needs

Throughout my experience working with students and families, I have learned that no two children are the same.

Some students may need additional academic support. Others may benefit from accommodations, behavioral services, social-emotional support, assistive technology, specialized instruction, or simply a better understanding of how they learn.

My goal is to help families identify those needs, understand the resources that may be available, and become confident participants in the process.

I especially enjoy helping parents take what can feel like an overwhelming amount of information and turn it into a clear plan focused on one thing:

A successful outcome for their child.

Helping Families Navigate IEPs and 504 Plans

IEPs and 504 Plans are designed to provide students with the support they need to access their education and make meaningful progress. However, understanding whether a plan truly reflects a student's needs can be difficult.

I work with families to better understand their child's:

• Evaluations and assessment results

• Present levels of academic performance

• IEP goals

• Accommodations and modifications

• Related services and supports

• Areas of concern that may not yet be addressed

• Progress toward previously established goals

Most importantly, I help parents prepare for conversations with their child's school so they can ask informed questions and clearly communicate their concerns.

Parents know their children better than anyone. My role is to help ensure that their knowledge, concerns, and priorities are part of the conversation.

You Don't Have to Navigate the Process Alone

One of the reasons I created TalkToMyAdvocate is because I have seen how much of a difference it can make when a family has someone helping them understand the process.

Sometimes a parent simply needs someone to review an IEP and explain what it means.

Sometimes they need help preparing questions before an upcoming meeting.

And sometimes they want an advocate beside them during the IEP or 504 meeting to help make sure important concerns are discussed and addressed.

Whatever stage your family may be in, my approach is centered around education, preparation, collaboration, and advocacy.

My goal is never to create unnecessary conflict between families and schools. When possible, I believe the best outcomes happen when families and educational teams can work collaboratively while keeping the student's needs at the center of every decision.

Serving Families Throughout Los Angeles County

Los Angeles County includes many school districts, schools, programs, and communities. Every family's situation is different, but the questions I hear from parents are often very similar:

"Is my child receiving enough support?"

"What does this evaluation actually mean?"

"Are these goals appropriate?"

"Can I request additional services?"

"What should I ask during the IEP meeting?"

"I know my child is struggling, but I don't know what to do next."

These are important questions—and you deserve to understand the answers.

My Commitment to Families

When you work with me, I want you to leave the process feeling more informed and more confident than when you started.

I want parents to understand the documents they are signing.

I want them to know which questions to ask.

I want them to feel comfortable expressing concerns.

And most importantly, I want every conversation to remain focused on helping their student receive the resources and opportunities they need for a successful educational experience.

Advocacy is not simply about attending a meeting.

It is about helping families find their voice.
